Worship Ministries

Voice of Victory

Our Sanctuary Choir ministers to both the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services on a rotating schedule each week. Choir practice is open to everyone, and we rehearse music for Sunday's service every Wednesday from 7:45 - 8:30 pm in the Sanctuary. Each summer we break to gear up for the fall.

This coming fall we will begin working on our Christmas Cantata, Let Heaven and Nature Sing Gloria!, written by Mark Hayes. Cantata practice is open to all and rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings 7-7:45 pm in the Sanctuary.

Who-so-ever-will Choir

This is a one-of-a-kind choir Powhatan UMC has developed to provide informal special music on Sunday mornings. Our Sanctuary Choir rotates singing between the 8:30 am and the 11:00 am services, so the "Who-So-Ever-Will Choir" provides special music for those alternate services that do not have choir leadership.

During the offering, anyone and everyone present at that service is invited to come up to the front and sing a familiar song that is chosen. No experience necessary, no practicing, just a lot of fun!

Acolytes

The acolytes are a key part of the worship team because they symbolically bring in the light of Christ. Because of their importance, it is not unusual for children, youth and adults to serve in this manner.

Greeters

visit Powhatan United Methodist ChurchGreeter Ministry Receives Blessings! It truly is a blessing to serve as a Greeter. As a Greeter, you are God’s servants welcoming visitors and members to worship each Sunday morning to celebrate the glory of God. Can you think of a better way to start your day? Or a better way to meet new folks?

Participation is at the 8:30 or the 11:00 service. You will be included in the next schedule beginning July 5th. Your commitment will be to serve 1-2 Sunday’s per quarter. You will be provided with the schedule, fellow greeter list, and a letter describing basic responsibilities. If you have a scheduling conflict with an assigned Sunday, you can contact others on the greeter list to trade dates or contact me (Bonnie Schulkers at 403-3990 or ZR1Bonnie@aol.com). If you don’t “feel” the blessings, you can opt out.

Now for all of you Greeters currently receiving the blessings of the Greeter Ministry, I thank you for your participation and look forward to seeing your smiling faces on your assigned Sundays! If you would like to take a break and opt out of the next schedule, please notify me no later than June 7th. The new schedule will begin July 5th. Again, I thank you for your service, your time and your dedication to PUMC.

God's love for people is communicated through those who greet others with joy and sincerity and provide special assistance to those in worship service by helping with children or having a spare bible ready.

Ushers

The ushers serve a very important role in the worship service and perform a variety of housekeeping duties before, during and after the service. The ushers provide a warm, friendly atmosphere for each worship attendee. He/She manages the non-religious aspect of the service, answering questions about the church and the service, assists those with special needs and observes the congregation to see where he/she may be of help.

Dorcas Ministry

The Dorcas Ministry serves to beautify our sanctuary through the creation of banners and paraments for the altar.

Acts 9:36-42 tells us about Dorcas, a woman of Joppa, who was a Godly woman. As such, she was in service to her community, notably the widows and poor. When she died, her friends were devastated and sent the men 12 miles to Lydda to ask Peter to come.

When Peter arrived he heard of her good deeds and saw the robes and other clothing she had made and knelt in prayer. Then he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes and sat up. God had restored her life. Her Greek name, Dorcas, means the female of a roebuck, a gazelle and emblem of beauty, as does her Aramaic name, Tabitha.
